Standard at Tabletop Commons
Standard is Magic: The Gathering’s rotating 60-card constructed format. You bring a deck built from the current Standard card pool and play one-on-one matches against other local players.
Our Thursday night Standard session is a place to test a homebrew, tune an established list and get regular games in with the Illawarra Magic community. You do not need to arrive with a top-tier tournament deck. Newer organised-play players and experienced competitors are both welcome, and good sportsmanship matters more than the archetype you bring.
Because Standard changes as sets enter and leave the format—and because individual cards can be banned—it is worth checking your list before each event. Your main deck must contain at least 60 cards, and you may bring an optional sideboard of up to 15 cards. If you are unsure whether something is legal, arrive early and ask the team to check it with you.
When you arrive: check in at the counter with enough time to settle in and join the event. Have the Magic: The Gathering Companion app ready if you use it, and let us know if this is your first organised Standard night so we can explain the evening’s structure.

How the event works
Before you arrive, confirm that every card is legal in the current Standard format. Your main deck needs at least 60 cards and any optional sideboard can contain up to 15; if you are unsure about a card or set, bring the deck early and ask the team to check it with you.
Say hello at the counter, join the event and settle in before play begins. The organiser will explain the evening’s structure and pairings, and can help if this is your first organised Standard session.
Play one-on-one matches with your prepared deck, use your sideboard where the match structure allows it, and report results as directed. Each round is a chance to learn the local metagame, test changes and improve your list for next week.
Prepare with confidence
Standard’s legal card pool changes over time as sets enter and leave, and individual cards can be banned. Check the current legal sets and banned list before the event, or arrive early and ask us to help.
A focused 60-card deck is usually easier to draw consistently than an oversized list. Include enough lands and a useful spread of mana costs so your deck can make meaningful plays throughout the game.
An optional sideboard of up to 15 cards lets you adapt between games when the match structure uses one. Choose cards that address the strategies your main deck finds difficult rather than filling it with unrelated extras.
Sleeves, dice, tokens and the Magic Companion app make the evening smoother. Bring a pen or notes if you like tracking matchups and changes, and label any cards or accessories you do not want to misplace.
