Event guide

Everything you need to know.

Commander nights at Tabletop Commons are relaxed, social Magic sessions built around good games and finding the right table. Bring a Commander deck, meet local players and use a quick Rule 0 conversation to agree on deck strength and the kind of game everyone wants.

These are not formal tournament nights. There is no pressure to bring an optimised deck, and both newer players and experienced regulars are welcome. The live cards below are the source of truth for the next session time and any changes.

When you arrive: check in at the counter, tell us it is your first visit if applicable, and we will help you find a suitable pod.

How the event works

What to expect

01

Check in

Say hello at the counter when you arrive and let us know if it’s your first Commander night. We’ll point you in the right direction, introduce you to some players and help you get settled into the evening.

02

Find your pod

Grab a table with some other players, or ask us to help you find a group that suits your experience level and the kind of decks you’ve brought along. Don’t worry if you’ve come by yourself — plenty of people do.

03

Rule 0 & play

Before shuffling up, have a quick Rule 0 chat about deck strength, expectations and the sort of game everyone is looking for. Once everyone’s on the same page, shuffle up, play some Commander and enjoy the night.

Prepare with confidence

Tips for your day

Have a Rule 0 Chat

Commander works best when everyone at the table is looking for the same kind of game. Before you start, talk briefly about deck strength, fast combos, unusual strategies and anything else that might affect expectations.

Bring a Couple of Decks

If you have more than one Commander deck, bring a few with different power levels or play styles. It makes it much easier to fit into different pods and gives you something else to try if a particular matchup is not much fun.

Play to the Table

Commander is a social format, so winning is only part of the experience. Pay attention to how the game is developing, give people room to play their decks and remember that creating a great game is usually more memorable than ending one as quickly as possible.

Ask Questions

Commander has a huge card pool and some very complicated interactions, so nobody knows every card or rule. If you are unsure what something does, ask. Most players are happy to explain their cards, and it is one of the easiest ways to learn the format.

First-time player FAQ

Know before you play

Clear answers for first-time and returning players.

Do I need a competitive Commander deck?
No. Our regular Commander nights welcome a range of decks. Talk honestly about power level and expectations before each game so the pod can find a good match.
What should I bring?
Bring a legal 100-card Commander deck, your commander, sleeves and any dice or tokens your deck uses. Bringing a second deck at a different power level can make matching easier.
What is a Rule 0 conversation?
It is a quick discussion before the game about deck strength, unusual cards or strategies and the experience everyone wants. It helps the pod start with shared expectations.
Can I attend if I am new to Commander?
Yes. Check in at the counter and tell us you are new. We can explain the flow of a multiplayer game and help you find a welcoming table.
Do I need to register?
Regular Commander sessions are currently drop-in and free. Check the live event card before travelling in case a particular session changes.
What happens if my deck is much stronger or weaker than the pod?
Say so before the game. Players can change decks, adjust expectations or move tables so everyone has a better match.
