Booster Draft at Tabletop Commons

Booster Draft is one of the best ways to play Magic: The Gathering if you enjoy opening packs, building decks and making decisions on the fly. Every player starts on equal footing with three booster packs, drafts a pool of cards, builds a 40-card deck and then plays that deck across the event.

Our Sunday drafts are intended to be friendly and accessible while still giving everyone some proper games of Magic. Experienced drafters are welcome to battle it out, but you absolutely do not need to know the format inside out before you arrive. If it is your first draft, tell us when you check in and we will happily explain how everything works and help you get settled.

How does a Booster Draft work?

Players are seated in draft pods, usually of up to eight people. Everyone opens their first booster, chooses one card to keep and passes the remaining cards to the next player. You then choose a card from the pack passed to you and continue until every card has been drafted.

You repeat the process with all three boosters, alternating the direction that packs are passed.

Part of the fun is working out what is open around the table. You might start with one plan and completely change direction after a few picks, discover an unexpected synergy, or have to decide between the perfect card for your deck and something particularly nice for the collection.

Once drafting is finished, you will use the cards you selected to build a minimum 40-card deck. We provide all the basic lands you need, so there is no need to bring cards from home.

After deckbuilding, everyone plays a series of matches using the deck they have just created. Events will generally run three Swiss rounds, although the exact structure can vary depending on attendance.

You keep everything you draft, including the deck you build. We just ask that any basic lands borrowed from the store are returned at the end of the event.

Prizes

Our regular drafts include booster prize support, with prizes confirmed at the beginning of the event. We want the focus to stay on drafting, playing some good Magic and having a fun Sunday afternoon rather than turning every week into a high-pressure tournament.

When you arrive: check in at the counter before the event starts. If this is your first draft — or your first visit to Tabletop Commons — let us know and we will help you through the process.

Seating for drafts is limited, so booking ahead is recommended. Because everyone needs to begin drafting together, the event starts on time, so please arrive early enough to check in and get seated.

How the event works

What to expect

01

Deck Building

Start with three booster packs. Open your first pack, choose one card to keep, then pass the remaining cards to the next player. Keep picking and passing until every card has been drafted, then repeat the process with your remaining packs.

02

Construction

Once the draft is finished, use the cards you selected to build a minimum 40-card deck. Work out your best colours, creatures and spells, then grab any basic lands you need from our land station to finish your deck.

03

Games

Once everyone has built their deck, it’s time to play. You’ll battle other players in best-of-three matches across a Swiss-style tournament, putting your freshly drafted deck to the test and competing for prizes.

Tips for your day

Learn the Format

Every draft set is built around colour pairs, mechanics and archetypes that are designed to work together. You don’t need to memorise every card, but knowing the main themes gives you a much better idea of which cards belong together and what your deck is trying to do.

Stay Open Early

It can be tempting to decide your colours after your first good card, but try not to lock yourself in too quickly. Pay attention to what keeps getting passed to you — if strong cards from one colour are arriving late, it can be a sign that those colours are open.

Build a Curve

A deck full of powerful cards can still struggle if you have nothing to play in the early turns. Try to spread your creatures and spells across different mana costs so you can consistently affect the game rather than waiting around for your expensive cards.

Prioritise a Deck, Not Cards

The strongest card in a pack is not always the best card for you. As the draft progresses, think about what your deck actually needs — creatures, removal, fixing or a specific synergy — and choose cards that make the finished deck stronger rather than simply taking the flashiest option.

First-time player FAQ

Know before you play

Clear answers for first-time and returning players.

Do I need to bring a deck or cards?
You do not need to bring a deck. Your cards for the event all come from the boosters you draft. If you have them, bringing sleeves, dice and any tokens you regularly use is handy, but none of this is essential. Players are also encouraged to have the Magic: The Gathering Companion app installed so they can join the event and report match results.
Is Booster Draft suitable for a first event?
Yes. It combines opening packs, deck building and play without requiring a collection. Tell the organiser you are new before drafting starts.
Which set will we draft?
The featured set changes with the current draft season and special releases. The live event card and description are the source of truth.
What does the draft cost?
The regular published entry is $35. Check the live card for the current price and any session-specific prize support.
