Learn with people, not a rulebook.
MTG Academy is Tabletop Commons’ beginner-friendly way to learn Magic: The Gathering in Warrawong. The monthly Saturday session gives new players a calm introduction to turns, cards, combat and the flow of a real game.
You do not need to arrive knowing the rules or having a regular playgroup. Come with questions, learn at your own pace and get help finding the next step after your first game.

How Academy works
Your first game in three steps.
Learn one turn at a time
Work through cards, turns and combat in a practical order. The focus is on the rules you need to make decisions in a first game, without expecting you to absorb everything at once.
Play a guided game
Put the basics into practice with support at the table. Pause when something is unclear, ask questions and finish with a clearer idea of what you would like to learn or play next.

Bring your questions
You do not need to study the rules first. If a card, phase or interaction has confused you before, bring that question and we can work through it at the table.
Learn at your pace
Ask us to repeat, slow down or revisit a step whenever you need. Understanding why a play works is more useful than rushing through a full game.
Come solo or with a friend
Both are normal. We will help solo visitors settle in, while friends can learn together and practise the same basics after the session.

Before you leave, tell us what you enjoyed. We can point you towards a suitable next session without assuming you are ready for competitive play.

Before your first session
Clear answers designed to make a first visit feel comfortable.
Do I need to know how to play Magic?
No. MTG Academy is designed for beginners. We start with the essentials and explain the game as you play.
Do I need my own cards or deck?
Contact us before the session and we will confirm what is provided and what, if anything, you should bring.
Can I come alone?
Yes. Coming alone is completely normal. We will welcome you, explain the session and help you find the right table.
What age is Academy suitable for?
Contact us with the player’s age before booking so we can confirm the right session and any supervision requirements.
Will I be expected to play competitively?
No. Academy is a supported learn-to-play session, not a tournament. Questions and slower-paced games are welcome.
What happens during the session?
We introduce the core parts of a turn, explain cards and combat, then help you try those ideas in a guided game.
What if I learn more slowly?
That is fine. The session is designed to make room for questions and let new players learn at a comfortable pace.
